Although some undervalue humanities and argue that they are not as important as economics and technology, I believe that humanities outweigh their disadvantages for the following three reasons.
Firstly, humanities education provides a moral compass, essential for human society. Nowadays, science and technology are advancing rapidly, making the morality of those who use them increasingly essential. For instance, artificial intelligence (AI) and nuclear weapons are typical creations that pose risks of harm to humans. Without a strong sense of ethics, managing these innovations becomes challenging.
Secondly, humanities education serves as a guideline to solve social problems. Research on poverty, discrimination, and unemployment within humanities education contributes to creating a more level playing field.
Finally, humanities education contributes to preserving nations' cultural heritage and advancing humanity. The education in humanities, through studying the knowledge accumulated by humanity, such as language and philosophy, generates new cultures for the future. Additionally, the study and practice of art, music, and literature allow students to appreciate, create, and preserve masterpieces and immortal works of art, which are the quintessence of human civilization.
In conclusion, through improving the sense of ethics, setting a guideline for social problems, and contributing to human culture, I advocate that humanities education still plays a significant role in our lives.
