1. persons, a person, they, heが同一の人間を指すというのはよくわからない
現代英語版では以下のようになっていて（persons→people, a person→you）明らかに別々の人を指している
There are people (fortunately not quite as many as there used to be) who will be satisfied if you assent undoubtingly to something that they think is true, even if you have no knowledge whatever of the grounds for the belief in question and couldn’t defend it decently against the most superficial objections.

「自分の信条を権威が（一般大衆に）教えてくれるのなら」と取れなくもないが「権威が自分に対して教える」とも読めるため微妙では

このbeforeは「直面して」のような意味では？
つまり、「議論とも呼べない代物に直面するだけで崩れ去ってしまいかねないのである」

ここはset aside this possibilityの意味だと思うんだけどなあ
段落C
on what can these faculties be more appropriately exercised by any one, than...「誰であれこれら能力を最も適切に行使できる対象とは」
このexercisedは行使というよりは鍛えるの意味では
光文社訳「そうした能力を鍛えることが誰にとっても一番適切なのではなかろうか」
