Are long term prisons the best way to rehabilitate criminals?
This topic reminds me of one of my favorite movies, the Shawshank Redemption. The story is about an innocent prisoner who finally dug a tunnel to escape from his prison. I remember an old convict in the movie. He was a very skilled librarian in his prison, but when he became very old, he became a free man. Then he began to work at a super-market. His job was packing goods in paper bags for costumers, but he was often scolded by his boss and customers. He was obviously too old to work properly.
I believe long terms prisons are not the best way to rehabilitate criminals, thinking about lives after they became free because just like in this movie, in many cases convicts cannot work enough due to their old age.
Therefore, we need to maintain long term prison system, long term prisons need to be used to deter potential criminals from committing crimes, which means this system need to be used as a punishment. If this cannot be morally accepted, this system should be abolished, or convicts should be given pensions after being allowed to leave their prisons.
In conclusion, long term prisons cannot become the best way to rehabilitate criminals.
