Elephant Manは、すでに何度も繰り返してみている。
今回は、Samuel BarberのAdagioを聴くという目的があった。この曲が流れるのは
最後に、Elephant Man、John Merrickが、永遠の眠りにつく場面だ。彼にとって
この時が、人生の中で最も幸せな時となる。
この映画は、彼の外見的な醜さと、彼の内面的な美しさが対比されているところだと
思う。 ひどく醜い外見の故に、迫害され続け、似非「慈善家」たちの偽善に接した。
でも彼は、誰よりも純真で美しい心を持っていた。
彼が、映画の中で読む「Psalm 23 」は、とても美しい。
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for
his name's sake.
