「Must」には過去形・未来系がない。過去について述べる場合は「had to」か「has had to」を使う。
I had to wait half an hour for a bus.
「Will have to」は未来について述べる際に使用する。なお、既に予定が立っている場合は「have to」を使う。
We'll have to borrow the money we need.
I have to go to the dentist tomorrow.
「have to」で疑問系にする場合は「do」と併用する。
Do the children have to wear a uniform?
否定文においては「must not」と「don't have to」となるが、意味は大きく異なる。
「Must」は「してはいけないこと」を述べる際に用いる。
Passengers must not smoke until the signs have been switched off.
短縮形の「mustn't」は特に英式英語において使われる。
You mustn't leave the gate open.
「Don't have to」は「する必要が無い」場合に使われる。
You don't have to pay for the tickets in advance.
She doesn't have to work at weekends.
