Reading gave me an excuse for privacy, or perhaps gave a sense to the privacy imposed on me, since throughout my childhood I lived apart from the rest of my family, looked after by my nurse in a separate section of the house.
Then my favorite reading-place was on the floor of my room, lying on my stomach, feet hooked under a chair.
Afterwards, my bed late at night became the safest, most secluded place for reading in that nebulous region between being awake and being asleep.
