Since [ɾ] is rare in mainstream RP (except perhaps in the environment following a dental fricative),
its frequent use can furnish a useful diagnostic.
It is particularly striking in accents like Noel Coward's, which is perhaps what has given many Americans
the mistaken impression that [ɾ] is the usual realization of RP (or 'British') /r/.
