Hi, I am an American who likes to join Japanese web-community.
Yester-night, I was pretty shocked to hear the news that an Indian whose name was "Kovid" received insulting reaction when telling his name in the cafe because of the similarity of his name to "Covid", another name of corona virus.
However, far more shocking than the news is the reaction of one of Japanese citizens to the news. Disgustingly enough, he said that this Indian guy should use a false name to avoid the discrimination.
It's quite clear that it is not from insulting reactions itself that Mr. Kovid was suffering, but from the fact that people treated his name bad, which his parents bestowed upon him.
From this absurd opinion of his, I understand why Japanese people are so devoid of the guilt feeling to the Korean people for having deprived their original Korean names in the age of Korean occupation.
