Investigators at scene of explosion at NuStar Energy facility in Crockett

A day after an explosion at an oil storage facility near Crockett sent a huge fireball into the skies, burning for several hours and closing Interstate 80, firefighters remained on the scene as investigators began looking into the cause of the blast.
Firefighters declared the blaze contained shortly before 9 p.m. Tuesday, about seven hours after the explosion. Capt. George Laing, of the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District, said there were no reports of flare-ups overnight but firefighters remained on the scene.
“We still have units out there and we will be out there all day,” said Capt. Patrick Hamilton, of the Crockett-Carquinez Fire Protection District.
Investigators will also be at the NuStar Energy facility, which sits between I-80 and San Pablo Avenue near San Pablo Bay. Contra Costa fire investigators have been at the site since Tuesday afternoon, and Cal-OSHA investigators were expected to join them Wednesday. Air quality monitors are also expected to sample air in the vicinity of the plant, after shelter-in-place orders were issued Wednesday for seven-plus hours.
