I think he is really really trying. You should talk to him. He just... is not the best writer/expositor. He knows that too. You don't think he wants this to be over? A lot of this to me is that he is a product of this arithmetic geometry culture. He was a student of Faltings. He went to Princeton where, you know... people aren't so nice. We don't really have a culture which values clear exposition. Anyway, I really don't think he can and I think he is trying (or tried). All this internet gossip I think wears on him. I don't know if you have met him, but he is a funny guy. He can do a pretty funny Faltings impersonation. I think people fail to realize he is mortal, just like everyone else.
