What is the row about?
The eight uninhabited islands and rocks in question lie in the East China Sea. They have a total
area of about 7 sq km and lie northeast of Taiwan, east of the Chinese mainland and southwest
of Japan's southern-most prefecture, Okinawa.
They matter because they are close to strategically important shipping lanes, offer rich fishing
grounds and are thought to contain oil deposits. The islands are controlled by Japan.
What is Japan's claim?
Japan says it surveyed the islands for 10 years and determined that they were uninhabited.
That being the case, on 14 January 1895 it erected a sovereignty marker that formally incorporated
the islands into Japanese territory. The Senkaku islands became part of the Nansei Shoto islands -
also known as the Ryukyu islands and now as modern-day Okinawa prefecture.
After World War II Japan renounced claims to a number of territories and islands including Taiwan in
the 1951 Treaty of San Francisco. But under the treaty the Nansei Shoto islands came under US
trusteeship and were then returned to Japan in 1971, under the Okinawa reversion deal.
Japan says that China raised no objections to the San Francisco deal. And it says that it is only since
the 1970s, when the issue of oil resources in the area emerged, that Chinese and Taiwanese authorities
began pressing their claims.

Chinese media and internet users have voiced shock at a hit-and-run incident
involving a two-year-old child left injured in the road as passers-by ignored her.
The toddler was hit by a van on Thursday in the city of Foshan.
After the van sped off, several pedestrians and vehicles passed the girl without
stopping. Several minutes later she was hit by another vehicle.
A rubbish collector finally helped her, but she is said to be seriously hurt.
The incident was captured on surveillance cameras and aired on local media.
'Lacking conscience'
The footage showed the van hitting the little girl, pausing briefly while she was
under the vehicle and then driving off, running over her legs.
It then showed about a dozen passers-by, including cyclists, a motorcyclist and a
woman and child, noticing the little girl lying injured in the street but walking on.
After she was hit by the second vehicle, a rubbish collector spotted the little girl
and moved her to the kerb, then began looking for her mother.
The child, Yue Yue, was taken to hospital for emergency surgery but pronounced
brain dead on Sunday, the China Daily reported.
The newspaper said she had wandered off while her mother went to collect some
laundry.
The drivers of both vehicles have now been arrested, the newspaper said, but the
incident has also triggered outcry among Chinese citizens.

Scam fears
Some said they understood the dilemma for the passers-by - that if they helped out
they might incur costs or be blamed for the accident.
The China Daily reported incidents in January in which elderly men who fell in the street
were left alone because people did not want to get involved.
It cited an earlier case in which a man, Peng Yu, who helped an injured elderly lady to
hospital was then found by a court to be liable for some of her medical costs.
Another case - in which an elderly woman believed to have fallen in the road accused a
man, Xu Yunhe, who stopped to help her, of hitting her with his car - also attracted
considerable attention.
"There's been so many cases where people have been treated unjustly after doing good
things," one comment said.
"I am not as rich as Xu Yunhe and Peng Yu are, we are all poor grassroots people," said
another. "If we get caught in a scam, this is it. All we can do is to dial 120

Wang Yue was knocked down by a van while wandering through a market, where her
parents run a shop. The driver sped off without checking on the girl's condition.

The most senior US senator, Democrat Daniel Inouye of Hawaii, has died of
respiratory problems at the age of 88.
Inouye had served in Congress since 1959, when Hawaii became a state, and

arm but destroying a Nazi bunker during a battle in Italy.
He was the first Japanese-American in Congress and most recently chaired the

Hackers from China have "persistently" infiltrated the New York Times for the last
four months, the US paper says.
It said the attacks coincided with its report into claims that the family of Chinese
Premier Wen Jiabao had amassed a multi-billion dollar fortune.
The hackers used methods which have been "associated with the Chinese military"
to target the emails of the report's writer, the paper said.
The New York Times said the hacking was focussed on the computers of David Barboza,
the paper's bureau chief in Shanghai who wrote the report, and one of his predecessors,
Jim Yardley.
The hackers had installed malware which enabled them to access any computer using
the New York Times network, steal the password of every employee, and access 53
personal computers, mostly outside the Times offices.
The Times said experts had found that the attacks "started from the same university
computers used by the Chinese military to attack United States military contractors in
the past".

"most prolific cyber espionage groups", a US cyber security firm has said.
Mandiant said Unit 61398 was believed to have "systematically stolen hundreds
of terabytes of data" from at least 141 organisations around the world.
The White House said it has taken its concerns about cyber-theft to the highest
levels of China's government.
In an indication of the military sensitivity around the Shanghai site pinpointed by
the report as home to the hacking group, the BBC's John Sudworth and his
camera crew were briefly detained by soldiers when they went to film the facility.
They were only released once they had handed over their footage.
'Extensive campaign'
In its unusually detailed report, US-based computer security company Mandiant
said it had investigated hundreds of data breaches since 2004, most of which it
attributed to what it termed "Advanced Persistent Threat" actors.
The most prolific of these actors is APT1, which Mandiant says is "a single organisation
of operators that has conducted a cyber espionage campaign against a broad range of
victims since at least 2006".
The firm said it had traced the hacking activities of APT1 to the site of 12-storey building
in the Pudong area of Shanghai. It said that Unit 61398 of the People's Liberation Army
"is also located in precisely the same area" and that the actors had similar "missions,

in recent years. Shortwave jamming is less frequent, it says, although it has hit
transmissions by BBC Persian in Iran and was historically used to block
broadcasts during the Cold War.

timed to cause maximum disruption to BBC World Service English broadcasts there.
