I think Prime Minister Abe recognizes, and certainly the Japanese people recognize, that
the past is something that has to be recognized honestly and fairly. But I also think
that it is in the interest of both Japan and the Korean people to look forward as well as
backwards and to find ways in which the heartache and the pain of the past can be resolved,
because, as has been said before, the interests today of the Korean and Japanese people so
clearly converge. They’re both democracies. You both have thriving free markets. Both
are cornerstones of a booming economic region. Both are strong allies and friends of the
United States. And so when you think about the young people of the Republic of Korea and
Japan, my hope would be that we can honestly resolve some of these past tensions, but also
keep our eye on the future and the possibilities of peace and prosperity for all people.
（安倍首相も、そして勿論日本の国民の方々も過去の出来事が包み隠さず公正に認識されなければ
ならないものであるいうことは分かっていると思います。しかしそれはそれとして、まさに過去を
振り返るのと同様に未来に目を向け、そして過去の心痛を解消する諸々の途を見つけることこそ、
日韓両国の人々の利益になることであるとも思うわけです。なぜなら、前にも申し上げましたように、
韓国および日本の人々の利害は今日、明らかに収斂しているからです。両国共、民主主義国家です。
両国には繁栄した自由市場があります。両国は好景気の経済的領域の礎石になっております。両国共、
米国の強力な同盟国であり友好国です。 そしてそれだからこそ、大韓民国と日本の若者たちを思う
時、私が希望するのは、過去の軋轢を忌憚なく解決することができるだけでなく、すべての人々の
将来の平和と繁栄の可能性に目を向け続けることができるということなのであります。）
