Although strange, this class system had the added benefit of keeping society stable.
It was generally thought that a person was “born” into a class.
It was therefore impossible for a person who was born into the lower class to be promoted to the middle class,
or for a person born into the middle class to enter the upper class, regardless of how their financial situation may change.
This, of course, caused a lot of frustration for people aspiring to better themselves, conversely, it
also generated great feelings of pride within each separate class.
The members of the lower classes professed to actually being proud of their position,
looking with disdain upon their so-called social superiors, and anybody of the same class who affected
the airs of a higher class was instantly declared an outcast.
