Animals have developed various ways to communicate.
They have so many different ways of communicating with each other that to list them would fill several books.
However, even a few examples show that other animal's communication styles are as surprising and peculiar as our own.
A smiling human who holds out her hand to be shaken is communicating without words.
So is the bee that whirls her body in dance.
The bee gives other bees directions to the flowers she discovered.
You may think that humans are always communicating more complicated messages than bees.
However, in this case, it is the bee that is communicating the more complicated message.
Many animals signal each other not by gestures but by using body chemicals.
Ants frightened by an enemy give out chemical alarms that other ants can smell.
Then every ant can hide ore prepare for attack.
Animals also use their voice to warm off animals from other species ― a dog barks at an approaching mailman.
Animals and humans that live together work out their own system of communication: a dog makes a whining noise when it wants to go outside.
In formal experiments, some researchers have communicated with chimpanzees by using simple sigh language or symbols on a computer keyboard.
But scientists have dealt with only a very small part of animal communication.
They hope that someday they will be able to understand what animals are saying to each other.
