In Laser Assisted Machining(LAM), a part of the workpiece is heated
immediately upstream of a single point cutting tool in a turning configuration.
A video tape has been made showing chip formation and measured tool
force for the normal machining and LAM.
The cutting process is analyzed and the shear plane temperature is
being calculated by the Cline and Anthony solution for a moving Gaussian heat source.
At the present state of our research with a 1400W laser, a tool
force drop in the range of 20% can be achieved at moderate cutting speeds.
A large drop might be attained with a more powerful laser.
