Whether you are Japanese or just interested in Japan and the Japanese
people, New York City has enough Japanese cultural events, restaurants
and shops to cure your homesickness or provide an insider's view of Japan.
The website of the Consulate General of Japan in New York, aozoraNYC
and other websites list cultural events, schools, stores, markets and
restaurants that are authentically Japanese. Visitors to the Consulate
General's site, for example, will find weekly programs of concerts, art
exhibits, dance events and seminars by leading Japanese artists and
experts in various fields. The Consulate also publicizes a wide variety
of events and activities for Japanese citizens.
While Americans flock to cherry blossom festivals and Japanese food fairs,
Japanese meet at shops, bakeries and markets where real Japanese food
is sold. Both Japanese and non-Japanese young people congregate in restaurants
and izakaya in the neighborhood east of Manhattan's Greenwich Village,
and at clubs featuring young Japanese musicians.
