"ask a lot of {person}" is used when you ask a person to help you, but you ask for more help than is
normal/reasonable. If they still help you, then the phrase shows gratitude for their hard work.
"pitch count" here is probably his number of pitches in a game, so I think saying it was "up" means he had raised his number of pitches enough for one game, and more wasn't necessary.
"go deep into games" is talking about time, so it's the same as saying "he has played for a very long time in a single game before".
