101 all-new tales of sex, crime and the bizarre from Japan's wild weeklies
Tabloid Tokyo 2
By M Schreiber, G Botting, R Connell, M Hoffman
Review by Steve Trautlein
>Featuring 101 tales originally translated for the “Wai Wai” section of the Mainichi Daily News and the
>“Tokyo Confidential” column in The Japan Times, “Tabloid Tokyo 2” includes dispatches from a boot camp
>for worn-out prostitutes and a monthly gathering of chikan train molesters. An entire chapter on food offers
>stories about lobster-flavored beer and soy sauce made from human hair, while a section on law-breakers details
>crimes committed by the elderly, by the police and by schoolteachers.
>For the new book, Schreiber and his co-authors -- Geoff Botting, Ryann Connell, Michael Hoffman and Masuo
>Kamiyama -- looked farther afield for source material. “We have drawn on a few more stories from the subculture
>magazines like Uramono Japan and Jitsuwa Knuckles,” Schreiber says. “These are without a doubt off the wall
>and barely credible, but really show the funny and imaginative side of magazine journalism here.”
