Twenty-two years have passed since its development was kick-started.
To become as close to an autonomous-thinking-and-moving droid as
possible, "Asimo," Honda's two-legged humanoid robot, has been undergoing
steady evolution.
On a cue from the catchword "Let's create Atom (aka 'Astro Boy')," Hirose
and others at Honda launched in July 1986 its development behind
closed doors.
In December 1996, Honda unveiled "P2," the world's first two-legged
walking robot. However, it stood 182cm tall and weighed as much as 210kg,
containing computer and radio equipment in its body. Four years later,
the company took the wraps off its smaller sibling, Asimo. Its latest version
is 130cm tall and as lightweight as 54kg.
Asimo is characterized by its ability to work collaboratively.
